Instrumentation: Piano

Level: 7 (Difficult)

Duration: ca. 6’ 30”

Program Note:

As a child, I never wanted to miss the first snow, and it was for this reason that I went to bed with my curtains open during the first winter months—to catch the first flakes through my window as they slowly drifted down and landed gently on the lamplit street below. The golden rays from the streetlights passed through my old glass window, resulting in seemingly magical beams of light that spread throughout my room.

Of course, during the weeks that followed, I was incredibly busy, building forts, trekking through the fields of snow behind my house, and imagining that I was an explorer to some never-visited land. In these moments, the frigid gusts of wind, which would have seemed harsh to any adult, were exhilarating. The snowflakes spun in glorious patterns, displaying some sort of ancient and beautiful dance.

However, before winter's end, my magical wonderland was reduced to a pile of snow, featuring a melting snowman that had been built with love the week before. And I, feeling somewhat melancholy, was forced to distill down, in my mind, the many enchanted memories, storing them away for safe keeping until they could be relived the next year.

Document Sizes: Score is formatted for printing on letter size (8.5”x11”) paper, though this document could technically be printed on any size paper.
